Descriptive Writing
We are beginning to describe the world around us using our Senses. Through touch, tase, smell, hearing and sight we can "show" our reader an image instead of just tell them about it.
Writing Experiences
Roly Poly's
In this activity we want to find a large hill that we can roll down. We will spend the first 10 minutes experiencing this with our senses. What do we feel like at the top of the hill? How do we feel at the bottom of the hill? What did the ground feel like under our skin? What did we hear or see? We will then brainstorm as many words as possible to describe the experience breaking them down into our senses before using these words to write 5 descriptive sentences. One sentence for each sense. |
Bubble Blowing
In this activity we will take turns blowing and popping bubbles in small groups. We will spend the first 10 minutes blowing and popping as many as we can to engage our senses. We will then brainstorm as many words as possible to describe the experience breaking them down into our senses before using these words to write 5 descriptive sentences. One sentence for each sense. |
Our gardenWe are so lucky to have an amazing garden right outside our classroom. But have you really taken the time to see, smell, touch and taste all the plants Matua Brent has grown?
You have 10 minutes to walk around the garden boxes recording lots of words to describe what your senses are showing you. These will help you to write a short paragraph describing our garden. If you are at home, walk around your own garden or backyard. |
The avocado grove We have a beautiful place in our school called the Grove, its where all our avocado trees are quietly growing. When we visit the grove, you will have 10 minutes to walk about and really take in all the senses that surround you. Record your ideas with a buddy using really interesting words and phrases. These will help you to write a short paragraph describing the Grove when you are back in class.
If you are at home and are able to go for a walk, visit a local park or special outside space to do this activity. |
