How does Harakeke help Rivers and Streams?
Harakeke helps rivers and streams by stopping rubbish before it gets to water. It also supports wildlife that clean up and eat leaves that are dropped by other plants. This means it gives a home to those animals and those animals stop the bits of plant getting into the water by eating them. Harakeke sucks the fertiliser out of the rainwater runoff before it gets to the river. The Harakeke uses the fertiliser to grow but if the fertiliser gets into the water it pollutes the water. Harakeke stops sediment from running into the river. If the sediment gets into the river it will become cloudy and life won’t flourish.
